Throw to smoke, not that will be bald
Thursday, November 29th, 2007
WAN Smoking adds to a man’s chances of becoming bald, research suggests. Male pattern baldness is hereditary and can be caused by advancing age.
But Dr Lin-hui Su, from the Far Eastern Memorial Hospital, who led a study of 740 Taiwanese men with an average age of 65 found that there was a clear link between men who were moderately or severely bald and the number of cigarettes they smoked.
He suggested that smoking destroyed hair follicles or the cells at their roots that circulate blood and hormones. His findings were reported in the journal Archives of Dermatology.
