The Secret of Brownie Points
Brownie points are the ever-elusive, intangible positive things that make your stock go up in your beloved??™s eyes. It??™s the subtle trade of favors that are exchanged in any relationship. Wife and husband, child and parent, and boyfriend and girlfriend.
The good things you??™ve done go a long way
toward proving that you??™re willing to work or sacrifice to make someone else happy.
Something like:
???Junior raked the leaves, so he can have the car for the mall road trip.
???You fixed up your friend with her friend, so you??™ll all go bowling.
???He cleaned up the house, you let him go on his fishing trip.
???You put up with his mother for a three-hour visit, so he??™ll baby sit while you go on your girls??™ night out.
In the world of dating, however, brownie points are a necessary give and take to move the relationship forward. And they add up quickly. Since it??™s assumed you both want the relationship to work, you need to take a proactive attitude towards keeping the flame alive. Something like:
???You make sure you call her once a day (or week)??”pick one and stick to it.
???You refrain from making comments about his sister??™s attire (less said the better).
???You watch an episode of Oprah to keep up on current events in women??™s issues.
???You avoid scheduling dates on Monday nights during football season.
???You kiss her in public.
???You use his first name without adornment (it??™s Bruce not Brucey-woocy).
Brownie points also help you get out of the dog house. The imaginary ???spot??? where bad behavior lands you. If you made a nasty comment about her mother, no need to wonder why your phone calls have gone unanswered. If you called him a dope in public don??™t be puzzled as to why your e-mails are being ignored. You??™ve been treated to an indefinite stay at Dog House.
To fight your way back into his or her arms, do two things: keep apologizing with every call, e-mail or text message. And make a date, pronto. Something simple, say, dinner and a movie. This opens the lines of communication so you can find out what you did wrong (so you don??™t repeat it and end up in the dog house again). You’ll also make sure the relationship gets back on track. You want to show him or her that you??™re sorry. Resume brownie points as soon as the two of you are back together.
