Your Christian Marriage Vows - To Say Submit or Not?
Many couples who are about to get married often consider which form of the wedding vows they would like to use. Will you choose to use the words ???submit??? when the new wife reads her promises to her husband?
For Christians, it??â„¢s helpful to look at what the term submit means in the Bible.
In
Genesis, it??â„¢s clear that the God, the Holy Spirit and Jesus were all present and took part in creation.
In Philippians 2:6 it says ???Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus: Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, but made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient to death ??“ even death on a cross!???
This states that Jesus had equal status with God, but chose to take on the nature of a servant. If we consider how Jesus came into this world, he entered the world as a child, born in a humble stable.
Paul, in a letter to the church in Ephesus, directed that it was necessary for “wives to submit to their husbands as to the Lord” (Ephesians 5:22).
Whilst feminists and women might take objection to the word submit, but it signifies a lack of understanding of what is truly meant by it.
The quote in Philippians helps us to understand that submission isn??â„¢t about position, but it is a choice. It doesn??â„¢t imply inferiority, but is about making a choice to submit to someone of equal status and position as yourself.
If you choose to use the words submit, you can do so knowing that it does not mean any inferiority, but equality between two people who love one another.
