The term libido in common use means sexual desire. Doctors consider a drop in libido to be a sexual dysfunction and treat it as a medical condition. Drop in libido is sometimes linked to decreases in naturally produced testosterone, a condition which occurs both in both men and women or estrogen in women. Some birth control methods are also known to cause a reduction in libido, especially in women.

There are various types of birth control

method used by women and men. There are more contraceptive methods readily available to women compared to men and hence the effect of birth control on libido is more pronounced on women.

Most women rely on the contraceptive pill. The second most used contraception method by women is an intrauterine contraceptive device (IUD). While the effectiveness of these methods is another matter of discussion, the effect of these methods on libido can range from subtle to more pronounced ones.

Various intrauterine contraceptives used by females have been observed to cause several unusual complications. These are heavy periods, bleeding and painful menstruations. These conditions usually improve with use. There is also the risk of pelvic infection. When such complications occur, the libido of a woman is affected greatly. However, on an average these are safe methods and most women report little or no changes in libido.

The other method of contraception that is widely used is oral contraception, or hormonal contraception. The contraception pill contains various female hormones whose job is to suppress ovulation by suppressing the release of the hormones by the pituitary gland. These pills can show certain changes in the libido of a woman since it involves hormonal changes in her body. However, intake of pills is one of the most widely used birth control measures used by women the world over. The efficiency of this method depends on the regular use of the pills.

In men, the two common methods of birth control are the use of condoms and vasectomy. Condom use is a matter of personal choice and preference. This method has virtually no effect on the libido of men, however, it has been observed to reduce or decrease the sexual pleasure of the man and the woman. Undergoing vasectomy has also not shown any significant effect in decreasing the libido of men.

To summarize, birth control methods may affect the libido of women based on the method adopted. However, there is little or no effect on the libido of men due to male birth control measures.
